ABOUT THE ARTIST
Carley Cornelissen was born and raised in country Victoria, Australia, before moving to Melbourne to study fine arts, majoring in painting, at RMIT Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. After completion of her degree and extensive travel she moved to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, where she currently works out of a studio in Buderim. Since moving to Queensland Carley has participated in group shows in Australia as well as London, Stockholm, Brussels, Milan, Toronto, Hong Kong, Seoul and Singapore. She was received enthusiastically in London where her work has sold out for the past two years. Carley has been a finalist in several competitions including the Gold Coast Art Prize, the Leithbridge 10,000 Award and was highly commended at the Noosa Art Award.
Carley likes to use her work to get people to think about how their actions affect the environment. Her other passion has been sourcing recycled frames and surfaces for reuse. Not only is she reducing the impact her practice has on the environment, she also loves that she is adding to the history of the frame and giving it a new life. Not only is she reducing the impact her practice has on the environment, she also loves that she is adding to the history of the frame and giving it a new life. Carley uses bold colours to provide a glimmer of hope and to help people realise that we as individuals can make a difference. She also uses transfers as she feels the image represents the fragility of the situation, it shows how endangered species are here but also almost gone.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“When creating my pieces I seek to raise awareness of the independent lives of endangered animals and birds. I start with research and images of the particular species and then assemble my palette. I am inspired by colour combination and patterns that I see in everyday life, in nature, design and fashion.
I favour bright, contemporary colours and experimental techniques, including transfers and stencils. My process is playing with patterns, colour and negative space to see what emerges and take risks, do something I haven’t done before. I experiment with each new painting and that leads me into new ways of thinking about what a painting is and can be.”
